Uggs are known for their cozy, wooly, and stylish design during the fall and winter. These reasons make them the perfect snug shoe staple. Did you know that the Ugg brand was initially made for surfers? Australian accounting student and surfer, Brian Smith founded Ugg during the 70s. He quit his accounting career because he felt the need to do something else. While meditating he noticed that surfers like himself needed to find a way to stay warm post surfing. Sheepskin boots were ideal to keep surfers warm so that is how Smith got his idea. Smith took out a loan to head to California where he marketed his sheepskin boots. Woolskin boots did not exist in America so he wanted Americans to give his boots a try. At first, it was hard to market his product in California because consumers were unaware of the materials used and their durability. After three years, lots of advertising and not giving up on his product, sales grew rapidly in America. Uggs gained popularity during the 2000s because of celebrity endorsements and their relaxed, comfortable style. Today in 2025, Uggs still remain popular especially when the temperatures drop and now come in a variety of different styles that still provide comfort and warmth.
