Never Alone Video Game Review

Upper One Games in partnership with E Line Media has created a game truly like no other. Never Alone, also known as Kisima Innitchuna, is the debut installment in the team’s new “World Games” initiative, which strives to connect the 21st century audience with the largely unknown stories and culture of indigenous people from all over the world. Never Alone follows Nuna who is an Iñupiaq girl living in Alaska on a treacherous yet beautiful journey after her village is destroyed by a monstrous blizzard. The game is playable in about four to six hours and involves platforming and puzzle solving. What makes this game unique other than its historical content and atmospheric feel is the addition of over 30 minutes of interview with about 40 Alaska Native storytellers, elders, and members of the community. The whole game is narrated by a storyteller in the Iñupiaq language as well, further connecting the player to this vast culture. In addition to the Cultural Insights, the player has access to a comprehensive guide of artifacts complete with pictures, information about the item, and a quote from an Alaska Native providing a personal connection to the piece. These are unlocked as the game progresses. Nuna is accompanied by an arctic fox on her adventure. Two people can play cooperatively as either Fox or Nuna, or one can embark on a single player journey, switching between the two characters at the press of a button. Each character has unique abilities which must be used to accomplish different tasks such as Fox’s ability to climb up walls, fit in compact spaces, and jump very high whereas Nuna has the ability to climb ladders, push heavy objects, and throw her bola (an Alaskan hunting weapon) to break ice. Fox is essentially Nuna’s spirit guide who can summon Helping Spirits which aid in their quest. Art inspired by Alaskan native people is even added to convey the story. Its scenic atmosphere leads the player through underwater caverns, abandoned coastal villages, frozen tundra, and more while Nuna and Fox encounter friends and foes, both bizarre and familiar. The ethereal soundtrack accompanying the game really brings everything together contributing a desolate and frigid, yet lavish ambience. Never Alone is genuine, entertaining, and stunning. You should definitely look into if you have the chance.
