How to Get the Most out of the New Year

Andrea Benito Chino, Staff Writer

2020 has been a rough year for everyone, and I know that even though we’re already in the new year, it definitely doesn’t feel like it. “New Year, New Me” is really not working this time. However, despite all of this negativity, it’s important to look for the rainbow after the storm. It’s important that you look to better yourself and get the most out of this less than ideal situation. Moving forward, here is how to get the most of the new year:

  • Form a New Year’s Resolution!

A New Year’s resolution is a goal that you want to achieve by the end of the year. The mistake that many people make is making unachievable or non-measurable goals. So for this year’s resolution, make sure your goal is reasonable. It could be something as simple as doing 30 push-ups by the end of the year, eating healthier, drinking more water, or making your bed every morning. Anything that you can do and know when you’re making progress! Just make sure you stick with it!

  • Plan Something Fun!

Planning something fun makes sure that there is something to look forward to in 2021. It will be a motivator– something to look forward to when this whole coronavirus situation cools down. It could be as simple as taking up a new hobby, or planning a trip! It’s important to note that trips probably won’t be possible any time soon, so just make sure there is lots of flexibility in your planning!

  • Get Enough Sleep!

Believe it or not, getting a full 7-9 hours of sleep every night can positively impact your mood the next day! How nice does it sound to wake up and not feel tired? This is a perfect way to start off the year– and your day — on a positive note! Plus, studies have shown that when you’re sleep-deprived, you tend to recall fewer positive memories and more negative ones. So, in conclusion, get more sleep and think more happy thoughts!

  • Drink More Water!

Yes, I know it’s hard to accept, but drinking water is another great way to start off the year with a spring in your step! Studies have shown that people who drink more water have reported that they consider themselves to be happier than those who don’t. Did you know that underhydration can also cause headaches, tiredness, and anxiety? Drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning is a perfect way to lighten up your day. Just remember to drink water consistently throughout the day. Drinking water throughout the day is the only way that you’ll actually see positive results. It’s important to stay hydrated!

There are so many more things that you can do to get the most out of the new year. All you have to do is try! Happy New Year to all, and here’s to a (hopefully) better 2021!
