In a January 2018 article, TIME Magazine revealed Time’s Up, a movement created by hundreds of women in the entertainment industry. Its goal is to raise awareness about sexual harassment, a problem that women have faced for decades. Sexual harassment isn’t solely an issue in entertainment. As Sarah Jessica Parker told People Magazine, “It’s more important to know that it’s across industries. It’s about women in all industries.” In support of Time’s Up (which is a direct result of the #MeToo movement) men and women dressed all in black to the Golden Globes this year. Time’s Up is more than a social media hashtag; it actively seeks to help women everywhere. According to TIME Magazine, “Time’s Up formed a legal defense fund that currently totals $13 million in donations to help women from across the world of work to report sexual harassment or assault.” Women of all occupations, gender identities, sexualities, and races have started telling their own stories of sexual abuse. With the help of social media platforms, these stories and movements have been noticed by a more widespread audience than ever before, revealing the tragic commonality of sexual assault to the public and inciting change.

Aside from TIME Magazine and social media initiating the buzz for this movement, the Golden Globes was an opportunity for many of its founders to come together and share their stories with a wide audience. After receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award, Oprah Winfrey made her recipient speech about Time’s Up and recounted her own story. “So I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon! And when that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women and some pretty phenomenal men, are fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again.” Being a victim of many years of sexual abuse and an incredibly famous person in her own right, Oprah’s speech obtained 8.7 million views on YouTube, discounting the people who watched the event live. Her words were a good show of the ultimate goal of Time’s Up: a movement that affects and involves everyone, everywhere, of every walk of life. The examples go beyond actresses and celebrities. The stories are all around us. This movement aims to change our community so that, one day, no woman will have to say that she’s been harassed. This movement is just the beginning – a stepping stone. This issue affects many, and time is up.
