New Beginnings

Madeline Everson

One of Analy High School’s long-time favorite teachers, Mr. Sherron, has announced that he will be resigning from his position as a biology teacher at the end of this year. Mr. Sherron – who attended Analy himself from 1964 to 1968 – says that even though he has been a teacher for 43 years, it was not always his dream. It was after he graduated from UC Davis that he realized he wanted to be a teacher and not a veterinarian like he had previously thought. Mr. Sherron recalls that his at-the-time girlfriend was a teacher, and, if it weren’t for the excitement she shared with him about educating, he wouldn’t have become a one himself. If this were the case, we’d all be lacking in the wonderful man and teacher Analy has had for 36 years. Not only has Mr. Sherron taught biology and various other classes during his time at Analy, he also coached girls varsity softball for ten years. When Mr. Sherron was a student, he played one year of Colt League baseball as a senior. He was also involved in many activities throughout Analy, such as being his senior class vice president and president of the FFA. Mr. Sherron says that back then, all extracurricular activities were run through the school due to the lack of technology. For entertainment in high school, he enjoyed going to Shakey’s, an all night pizza parlor in Coddingtown that had a separate room just for high school students. He also liked “cruising” down 4th Street in Santa Rosa – despite it being jam-packed with other cars – along with dancing and Friday night dates. These days, Mr. Sherron
says that people don’t do many of the things he did in high school because technology and social media have taken their place. He had to socialize for entertainment. While technology is a monumental social change, he says, “The only difference between the years that have gone by and now is I’m older. The kids are always the sameage.” Mr. Sherron mentioned that as he gets older, he uses his age as a lens. “When I first started teaching, people saw me as the age of their older brother, then a bit later, the age of their dad – which nobody enjoyed – then finally, the age of their grandpa. And I’ve had the best relationships – despite me not wanting to believe I’m ‘grandpa’ age – because the kids feel the most comfortable around me. I’ve evolved as a figure in their lives.” Mr. Sherron enjoys teaching and meeting new students every year, and he values the relationships that he establishes with them. He loves being able to wake up knowingthat
there will be a fun day ahead of him, saying, “If you can’t laugh at New Beginnings least ten times a day as a teacher, you’re not doing it right because kids are funny as heck.” Sadly, this is his last year at Analy High School. He is currently looking for a new job and a new opportunity to meet students who will brighten his day. This is just what he should receive as he has touched not only the academic lives of many, but their personal lives as well. He’s been a wonderful part of Analy, and we wish him all the best on his next journey. Thank you, Mr. Sherron, for all that you’ve done. Your next
students will be incredibly lucky to have you.
