Recent Poll Shows Tightening Presidential Race
The New Democracy Corps poll of battleground states analyzing Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, released on September 23, shows that Clinton is losing her significant lead in battleground states. A poll released earlier this year on June 30 had Clinton leading by between 9 and 10 percentage points in each of the four battleground states where likely voters were surveyed. The states polled were North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and New Hampshire. However, according to the newer poll data, Clinton is now leading only by a margin of between 2 and 8 percentage points. Although the election cannot be decided in favor of one candidate until the actual ballots are cast, this narrowing margin has concerned Hillary Clinton’s supporters.
According to the poll, Clinton’s main area for improvement is among white, working-class men. This group accounts for 30% of the Trump vote. On the other hand, Clinton has more support from women, college graduates, suburban voters, and minorities. The Democracy Corps’ analysis of their poll data adds that “the race has tightened but Hillary Clinton is leading in the presidential battleground due to her strong support from unmarried women, minorities, and swing groups turned off by Donald Trump.” There is certainly room for improvement if either of the two candidates hope to broaden their voter demographic, but the presidential race is far from decided.
