Mr. Vice
1. How long have you taught at Analy?
36 years
2. What are your favorite aspects of the Analy community?
Analy is an awesome school. We have great students, teachers, and parents. Other schools try to emulate us, and I can only wish them good luck!
3. How were you first inspired to become a teacher?
Believe it or not, I had a teacher in 5th grade that inspired me. His name was Mr. Gilbert, and our class was learning stuff that the 6th graders didn’t. Not only was he a great teacher, he had fun doing it! I thought, “Wow this is what I want to do!” Plus, we get summers off!
4. What were your greatest concerns when you began teaching?
I was really worried about the impact I would have on the students. Would I be able to convey a positive educational experience? I also was concerned about my fear of students. Let’s be honest, you guys are pretty scary people.
5. What changes have you seen over the course of your career?
Music and fashion are the obvious changes that happen with every generation. But the biggest change by far is technology. When I started teaching we only had textbooks, and 16mm films. Now of course, the technological advances are too numerous to list. Although these enhance the learning experience, they are at times a curse. There are unfortunately many students who are addicted to their devices, which has really interfered with their ability to learn.
6. What do you enjoy about being a teacher?
What isn’t there to enjoy? But mostly it’s working with the students that I enjoy the most. Plus, you guys keep me young. After all, how can someone who looks 40 be retiring?
7. What are you most looking forward to in retirement?
Traveling is at the top of my bucket list. Plus, I can get up when I want to!
